Living -  MDSS supports individuals with Down syndrome as well as parents, caregivers and families in all stages of life:

• pre-natal and post-natal information and
  support
• building networks for support-groups
• educational workshops and resource library
• social activities for friendship building

Learning - Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement resulting from an extra chromosome 21.  This arrangement occurs in approximately one of every 800 births in Manitoba.  Individuals with Down syndrome demonstrate wide variations in mental abilities, behaviour and physical development.  They benefit from loving homes, early intervention, inclusive education and appropriate medical care.

Children and adults with Down syndrome are living as full members of society - going to school, finding work and living independent lives.  MDSS is dedicated to enhancing public awareness and understanding of Down syndrome.

Discovering - MDSS is committed to helping others discover the talents, abilities and successes of those with Down syndrome.  Building relationships with medical and educations personnel through workshops, news articles and personal contact allows MDSS to address misunderstandings and reinforce the inherent value of all people with Down syndrome.

Partners for Life - Strong partnerships with family members, friends and the wider community ensure that individuals with Down syndrome will continue to live full and dynamic lives and continue to make a positive difference in our world.  Please partner with us by joining MDSS

See Me Beautiful - an annual workshop is offered in the Fall for parents and school teams supporting a child with Down syndrome.  The goal of the workshop is to empower support teams welcoming children with Down syndrome into their classrooms by:
1) providing information regarding Down syndrome, with a focus on learning characteristics and academic programming
2) providing a setting where educators and parents can interact informally.

New Parent's Kit - the Labour of Love kit and a copy of the book, Babies with Down Syndrome, a New Parent's Guide is available to all new parents of a child with Down Syndrome.  New parents are also offered a complimentary one-year joint membership to the MDSS and CDSS.

Visiting Parents Program - is available to provide new parents (or family members, friends) with the opportunity to visit with a trained volunteer parent.  We understand the many emotions that you may be experiencing.  A visit may simply help you to realize you are not alone. Presentations have also been made at the three Winnipeg birthing hospitals, making staff aware of our program.  A referral for a visit can be made to the MDSS by anyone, providing the parents have given their permission. Please contact: susancearns@shaw.ca.

Parent Networking Evenings - several information evenings are planned throughout the year, focusing on specific topics related to raising a child with Down syndrome.  Please check with the MDSS for upcoming topics and dates.

Buddy Walk - established to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome and to celebrate National Down Syndrome Awareness Month.  This years Buddy Walk will be held on September 26, 2009.

Volunteer - MDSS is in need of more volunteers, whether it is a one time commitment or if you willing to help out on a specific committee.  MDSS is your organization and it relies on the membership to keep it going with fresh ideas, etc!!  Not a lot of time is necessary, but it's important to give back to the MDSS to keep the organization vibrant and strong.  A line from a song, (Brothers and Sisters), by Ken Hodges says, “If you take the time to learn about somebody else, you will find you might learn more about yourself.”

Respect PSA Video - This public service announcement was produced for and with The Arc of Northern Virginia and The Arc of Virginia by Will Schermerhorn.

Resource Library - our lending library is located at 204 - 825 Sherbrook Street.  We continue to search for and purchase current resources related to Down syndrome.  We recently donated one copy of the video "See Me Beautiful" and "It's Okay to be Different" to the Winnipeg Public Library. Newsletter-published at least three times each year and distributed to members.

Awareness Campaign - November 1-7 was Down Syndrome Awareness Week across Canada.  We placed ads in the local papers and provided a booth for two days at a local mall, promoting awareness of Down syndrome to the general public.  The campaign varies from year to year, but we consistently provide the booth and ads each year.

Family Fun Days - These are fun events meant to provide opportunities for families to get together.  The best information about what we can expect in the near future from our children can often be obtained from other parents in similar situations, sharing each others' stories.  It's comforting to know that you are not alone.  Check with the MDSS for the next scheduled event.

Joint Membership with the Canadian Down Syndrome Society - a total membership cost of $30 will give you joint membership with the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society and the Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS).  The CDSS provides a quarterly newsletter, a toll-free number for inquiries, national public awareness and support.

RDSP -The Registered Disability Savings Plan is a new Federal Government plan that allows funds to be invested tax-deferred until withdrawal.  It is intended to help an individual who lives with a disability to save for their long-term financial security.  The plan structure is similar to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP).

Feeding Study - A research project into the exploration of feeding issues in children with Down syndrome.  If people are interested in participating, May 1, 2010 is the deadline.

SpeakUpWinnipeg is an interactive website being used to create the city’s new 25-year plan called "OurWinnipeg". This is your chance to have a say in the city's future!
