At the September, 2007 meeting, your board unanimously accepted a proposal to increase the annual membership dues to $30 and enhance the benefits of belonging to the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society (MDSS). Beginning this September, membership in the MDSS will automatically include membership in the Canadian Down Syndrome Society (CDSS). As a board, we are very excited about this change.... we feel that it reflects a committment to working alongside our national counterparts and ads value to your membership. Joint membership allows all of us to continue to support the important work of the MDSS and also stand together with the CDSS in their work. This work currently includes playing a key stewardship role for supported employment by making the public aware of the need to facilitate more employment opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities across Canada. The CDSS is also continuing its work with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC). The CDSS has collaborated with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) to create a document that outlines the importance of making fair, balanced and accurate information available to prospective parents, not just women over the age of 35. With the CAGC, CDSS is collaborating to promote a value neutral language bank to be used by the medical community when communicating with prospective and new parents. This work is about removing long-standing language bias. We are confident that you will continue to see enormous value in your membership and look forward to helping shape the evolution of the MDSS as we continue to provide support, information and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome. ADDING VALUE TO YOUR MEMBERSHIP When your membership payment is received, a receipt will be issued and your “next” renewal date will be entered into our electronic calendar program which will generate a reminder to you next year at the appropriate time. Send us your $30 cheque and we will remit $15 to CDSS advising them to add/renew your name to their current mailing lists. Payments can be made with cheque or credit card. Cash payments can be made on Mondays and Thursdays ( 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.) when Mina is in the office. Thank you for keeping your membership current. |
