MDSS is a non-profit organization run completely by volunteers. Our goal and objective is to enhance the lives of individuals with Down syndrome while providing information to professionals (teachers, physicians, development workers, etc.) who work with our children. Our current board has a compliment of nine (9) members, all volunteering their time and energy to accomplish the above goal.
It is only through the efforts of many volunteers that projects are completed and events are held. We welcome your participation in any of the following volunteer opportunities.
Mall Displays - Held during Down Syndrome awareness week (the first week in November) A display booth is setup in one of Winnipeg's malls on Friday evening, and Saturday during the day. We require individuals who are willing to sit at the booth to answer questions, hand out information, etc. We arrange 2-hour time slots for volunteering. We encourage young adults and adults with Down syndrome to participate in this event.
Adult Down Syndrome Events - a parent, older individual with Down syndrome or any interested person(s) is needed to help organize special events for young adults and adults with Down syndrome. Our current board is young, most with young children.
We require assistance from someone more familiar with the interests and needs of this age group.
The board will then work together with this person(s) to help organize these events. We usually arrange to attend a Winnipeg Moose hockey game as a society event.

Committees - consist of a minimum of one board member with the balance comprising of volunteers, mainly from our membership. The benefit of volunteering on a committee is the friendships that develop working with other parents who share the same joys and challenges of raising a child with Down syndrome. Below is a list of committees where volunteer opportunities exist.
Public Relations Committee - a very important and exciting committee. Their focus is on public relations/awareness, specifically during National Down Syndrome Awareness Week (November 1 - 7), including the mall display and advertising.
Fundraising Committee - responsible for organizing the annual Buddy Walk and applying for special grants from organizations to support specific projects. Future fundraising projects may be planned as the need arises.
Education Committee - this committee is dedicated to providing information to parents and professional educators through See Me Beautiful conference workshops. There is lots of opportunity for interested individuals on this committee.
